Zeleny bridge (The green bridge)
The green (Police) bridge located through the river the Sink, became the first pig-iron construction in St.-Petersburg. Its occurrence in 1716 was preceded by creation on the left coast of Neva «Big perspective road», known now as the Neva prospectus. At crossing of this new highway with the Sink, there was a necessity of a crossing which became the unpretentious, wooden Green bridge. In 1730 the structure has been painted in green colour from what there was its name. In 1770 the bridge had other name – the Policeman, born from house located nearby Petersburg general полицмейстера.
In 1806 on a place of the old wooden bridge has been constructed new, pig-iron, erected under the project and under the direction of the architect V.Geste. The Bridge span has been blocked by the flat arch executed from hollow pig-iron blocks in which walls there were the apertures intended for connecting bolts.
It is necessary to notice that the bridge project has turned out so successful that has been recognised by a standard project for other bridges through the Sink, becoming, thus, the first-ever standard project for metal bridge constructions. Really, zamechatelnost the given project it is visually reflected in a design of the Green bridge which becomes even more obvious that the structure has turned out graceful and easy. The bridge possesses similar properties thanks to durability of pig-iron which has allowed to make an arch of a construction is much more thin and is more picturesque, rather than it happens at heavy granite bridges.
In 1842 the Green-police bridge has been expanded that it could pass freely all brisk movement of the Neva prospectus. In 1844 on the bridge the first roadway from the asphalt cubes, not meeting earlier in the Russian practice mostostroenija has been laid out. It has been made because in all Petersburg there was no more a driving, as on the Green bridge. During the period with 1904 for 1907 the bridge has been again expanded, giving the chance to existence to tram lines. In the same interval of time, diligence of architect L.Ilyin, on the bridge had been established lanterns.
In a Soviet period, since 1918, and finishing 1998, the bridge officially was called National, nevertheless, this name have not got accustomed, and together with returning in our country of capitalism, historical names of structures in which number there was also a Green name of the first pig-iron bridge through the Sink have returned also.
