The bridge of Lieutenant Schmidt
The bridge has been constructed in 1850 under the project of engineer S.V.Kerbedza and became the first, constantly operating, a crossing through Neva. The pig-iron, eight-flying construction has connected about Vasilevsky island to the central part of Petersburg near to a building of Academy of arts, on a joint of quays of Lieutenant Schmidt and University. Originally the bridge has been named by Blagoveshchensk, then, in 1855, it have renamed in Nikolaev, and in 1918 to the bridge the name of Lieutenant Schmidt as which it is called and to this day has been appropriated. Such name carries the bridge in honour of Peter Schmidt - the known lieutenant of the Black Sea fleet who for the revolt organisation in Sevastopol in 1905, has been shot. In its honour on a wall of the pavilion close to the central part of the bridge, the memorial board hangs. The general width of the bridge reaches 24 metres, and length - 331 metres.
Seven bridge spans have been executed from pig-iron arch designs, with «driving on top», the eighth flight became razvodnym in a horizontal plane, dvukrylym, located at the right coastal foundations. The pig-iron protective lattice of an engineering construction is solved in is decorative-art execution under the project of the architect And. P.Bryullov. Links it were decorated with tridents of the Neptune with palmetkoj and the fantastic sea fads, which tails are skilfully intertwined in a vegetative figured ornament. Internal space of racks of the bridge figures various under forms and height filled vessels. The bridge decor came to the end with the gas metal lanterns made under the project of D.Tsvetkova, and also Nikolay Chudotvortsa's chapel under the project of architect A.I.Shtakenshnejdera which has not remained about our years.
The bridge of Lieutenant Schmidt has served belief and the truth practically hundred years. Only during the period with 1936 for 1938 reconstruction of the bridge under the direction of academician G.P.Perederija and architect L.A.Noskova, caused by increase in transport loadings and navigation has been made. During capital reorganisation, pig-iron designs have been replaced on steel that has led to reduction of weight of the bridge four times. As to reconstruction has undergone razvodnoj flight, on replacement to which the ferro-concrete arch revetted with a granite has come, and other bridge spans have been anew blocked by not cutting steel arches. By the way, at the spent repair work, new designs of the bridge for the first time in history the Soviet building technics have been made by an electric welding method.
However the spent reconstruction of the bridge has essentially changed external shape of this construction. Straight lines of new flying beams have given to its outlines a little dryish character, and remote old lanterns and a chapel have a little simplified an intricate decor. Now as a reminder on the former bridge that most beautiful handrail which used for a protection from the very beginning and has been not touched by reconstruction serves only. New lampposts have been made under the project of architect L.A.Noskova. It is necessary to notice that the mounted decorative components of the bridge have not disappeared completely: lanterns shine now the Mars field, and pig-iron arch designs have left on bridge building through the river Volga in Tver and serve to this day.
At the moment, the bridge of Lieutenant Schmidt decorated with two pavilions and high lampposts, is the only thing from similar constructions on the Big Neva, leaning against wooden piles of the middle of 19 centuries and is famous for the fine panorama, opening a magnificent kind on historical city centre with the Isaakievsky cathedral, Admiralty, and picturesque University quay.
